NC Fall Foliage 2020 and Fall Colors

NC Fall Foliage 2020 and Fall Colors Are Here

NC fall foliage 2020 season is here with fall colors starting to appear. There is some color starting to show in the dogwood, sourwood, maple, sassafras and birch trees.  Typically the start of the fall foliage color change in Western NC will start to take place the last week of September in the highest elevations – those mountain areas north of Asheville and in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Any time now color will begin in the elevations above 5,000 ft such as Clingmans Dome, Mt. LeConte, Cataloochee, and Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains. Grandfather Mountain and the Boone area will start to show color in the highest elevations as well as Mount Mitchell, Craggy Gardens, and Rough Ridge along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Fall foliage is already starting to make an appearance along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Peak and near peak in the highest mountain elevations (over 5000 ft) is taking place now at Graveyard Fields and Rough Ridge. By this weekend the two areas should be at peak color. Local reports are there is a lot of color and the color is much better than normal. These two areas are always the first places that color starts to appear on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Even in the lower elevations color is making appearances in the sourwood, dogwood, maple, sassafras and birch trees. But most other trees are still mostly green.

Weather Forecast Perfect for Vivid Colors

Warm sunny days in the 70’s and cool nights in the 40’s are both in the forecast. Perfect weather for a colorful fall foliage outcome. This year’s fall foliage season is running right on time. Areas that typically show color next in North Carolina are Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Waterrock Knob, Black Balsam and Roan Mountain.  The mid-elevations are predicted to peak in the middle of October. Peak colors are predicted in mid-October for the area of Boone and Blowing Rock.

Follow Travel NC fall foliage reports and updates 2020. Know where to go and when to go to see those peak colors in the beautiful state of North Carolina. Lots of color has already begun to be reported in the highest elevations of the NC mountains!

NC State Parks May Reopen Soon

NC State Parks May Reopen Soon

North Carolina state parks may soon reopen. The governor in a recent news release said: “if all goes well in the fight against coronavirus”. The target date to reopen is May 9, 2020. Most of North Carolina’s state parks have been closed since the end of March. The stay-at-home order issued in late March due to the coronavirus resulted in state parks and business as well as schools to close. The
stay-at-home order along with the social distancing rule was to help slow the spread of the virus.

With the state parks closed since March, the animals seem to have taken back their land! There are many reports of increased sightings of deer, hawks, owls, woodpeckers, wild turkey and grouse. Even the black bear sightings by park rangers in the Great Smoky Mountains are on the increase. Many areas around the world have also reported on wildlife wandering around city streets. The air is clearer with less pollution in many areas and many waterways are sparkling clear and clean.

Many people still use the trails for walking and hiking in some NC state parks, but the bathrooms, campgrounds and visitors centers are closed. With the closures staff are keeping busy working on projects and making improvements and repairs.

The governor released a three-phase system to slowly reopen things in North Carolina. Reopening parks is in phase one. The North Carolina Stay At Home order is now expected to be lifted after May 8. Hopefully, by this summer we can all get back out to our beautiful state parks.

New Bonner Bridge Opening Soon

New Bonner Bridge Opening Soon

New Bonner Bridge is opening as soon as March 1, 2019. The new bridge that will replace the Bonner Bridge may open as soon as March 1, 2019. This is what the North Carolina highway engineers recently made public. The new high-rise bridge linking South Nags Head to Hatteras Island has been under construction since March of 2016. The new and improved link to Hatteras Island rises just over 90 feet at its highest point above Oregon Inlet inlet. The length of the new bridge is 2.8 miles and has two 12-foot-wide lanes with 8-foot shoulders for cyclists, pedestrians and disabled vehicles. The high-rise bridge has a life span of 100 years and cost $252 million.

Workers are attaching the final metal rails on top of the finished barriers. The bridge will have two 12-foot-wide lanes with 8-foot shoulders for cyclists, pedestrians and disabled vehicles. The old one has only a 2-foot wide shoulder.

The next few weeks the finishing touches are being completed on the new bridge. This includes cutting traction grooves into the concrete deck and pouring concrete for barriers along the sides of the bridge. Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative is now running cables under the bridge’s surface to provide power to Hatteras Island. Hopefully, by March 1st all will be completed and the new bridge will have a grand ceremony for its opening along with a brand new name!

Dare County has gone to Facebook and Twitter to ask the public for help in naming the new bridge. Over 300 suggestions have been sent in with ideas for a new name. Some of the suggestions include naming it for former state Sen. Marc Basnight, Andy Griffith and even Blackbeard. Some suggested keeping the name and calling it the New Bonner Bridge.

The old Bonner Bridge was completed and opened in 1963. The old bridge will be demolished with the concrete being used to add to the existing reefs off the Outer Banks. Part of the south end of the old bridge will remain for the use of fishing. The new Bonner Bridge opening will be an exciting event at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This new bridge will be able to withstand the ever-changing landscape of sea and sand due to wind, surf and storms

Salute to the old Bonner Bridge

The old Bonner Bridge will be missed by those that crossed it on their way to Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. Many a vacationer has fond members of the bridge. But the new higher and safer bridge will be a welcome addition to the Outer Banks! Can’t wait to cross the new bridge on my visit to Hatteras Island in the next few week! But the new height will make me nervous!
