3/1/14  Update: The NCDOT has reopened Highway 12 in Frisco to traffic. Gravel was put down so traffic could resume. In a few weeks the NCDOT will put down asphalt at the site. This spring Highway 12 will be resurfaced.

A planned Highway 12 closure starts Friday 2/28 for Highway 12 on Hatteras Island at the NC Outer Banks.  The highway will be closed for the weekend for road work starting Friday Feb. 28 at 7:00pm. No paved detour will be available, the highway will be completely closed down. Starting Friday prior to the complete  Highway 12 closure the road may have only one lane open as the NCDOT roadwork begins. The work being done will be located at Milepost 65 just north of Frisco. The highway closure will be from Friday 2/28/14 at 7:00pm until no later than Monday 3/3/14 at 6:00am. This info comes from the NCDOT. The roadwork must be done before the highway is resurfaced this spring.

While the highway is closed the state and Dare County are providing shuttle bus service for those that need to gain access north and south of the closure and for emergency use.  A pedestrian walkway has been provided at the work site and parking lots to the north and south. A temporary detour route for four-wheel-drive vehicles only will be allowed through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Ramp 45 and Ramp 49 will be open to allow for detour traffic. The detour is about a 9 mile detour with 5 miles over sand.
